Tatami Films
The film production company Tatami Films was founded in 2005 by Florian Schmidt-Prange, the filmmaker, who, after his studies and lengthy stays in London, Los Angeles and Berlin, decided to settle in Hamburg as a producer.
What to do with all the good movie material around? Where to place talented actors and not to forget good film directors? Tatami Films develops, brings together and implements. Due to productions in the U.S., India and Europe Florian Schmidt-Prange can rely on an international network, which together with the know-how of local filmmakers provides a solid foundation on which to establish fruitful co-operations.
The new in the familiar, the strange in the common, the present in the past, the wrongs in the right life, these are the issues hitting the nerve of Florian Schmidt-Prange’s generation, mostly conveyed by established independent movies. Perhaps modern, not modern in terms of putting trends and fashion into moving images, but modern by means of perceiving, transmitting and feeling the spirit of time. That’s when modernis good and inherits all the qualities of a classic. That’s the goal.
Florian Schmidt-Prange
Producer & CEO
After a Masters degree from the American Film Institute in Los Angeles, Florian Schmidt-Prange worked in film material development at Single Cell Pictures and Constantin Film, both in Los Angeles. As an independent producer, he developed advertising films, short movies and the documentary "Kumph Mela" in India. In the year 2002 he returned to Germany to work as production manager for the TV series "Edel & Starck" and then went on to create music videos and advertising films for the production company Dry-M.
Perhaps it's the view from the outside; perhaps also his craft acquired in American production companies, which eventually encouraged Florian Schmidt-Prange to launch Tatami Films, ultimately only pursuing his vision to make good films, rather than clinging to clichés, such as “mainstream”, “sophisticated", “author films" or "audience suitable”. They don’t exist in his world, nothing he aspires to. They only distract from the quintessential.
Member of German Film Academy and Member of European Film Academy.
